What’s in a title?

I’ve decided to start a series. I thought of a great name for it. I thought the name should be “Book Reviews of Books that have been Reviewed way too much.” But then I decided that was way too long, so I switched it to “Book reviews of books that have been reviewed 100 times.” It’s a little catchier, maybe, but still too long.

So I picked out a good thinking rock and I pondered, with one hand under my chin and my other arm draped across my knee. I sat that way for a while, just thinking and staring at the ground. Then it hit me.

“Book reviews of books you should’ve already read.” Thinner by two words, sleeker, shinier. But it still didn’t have that something, that oomph that makes you want to park and read through my thoughts on some classics. I needed something better. Something catchier.

My take on Chris McCandless

Perhaps you are like me. Perhaps things sometime slip right under your radar if you’re busy. Perhaps things that grip even the nation as a whole slide right by you unnoticed. Maybe not. Maybe you’re like my wife and you know everything. That was a joke, of course. I promise.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I was at a yard sale. Yes, a yard sale. Two teachers had some crap in boxes and one of those boxes was full of textbooks (actually several were) and another was full of works of fiction. Being that I love to read, I decided to peruse the latter.

Seeing nothing that interested me, I prepared to walk back to the car once my wife was finished when I was stopped by the man of the house. He was holding a thin paperback. He asked me if I ever read it. I replied no, that I hadn’t, and smiled hoping I wouldn’t have to go through a 20 minute persuasion speech. Of course, that speech began immediately.
