Fantasy Football, new books, and new friends
Sep 22nd
Sometimes you dig in, give it all you got, and still come up short. The Killer Bees, my Fantasy Football team in its sixth year, lost the second game in a row – despite recording the second highest point total in the league. The upside is I gained a spot in the rankings even with the loss, the downside is I’ve got to find a way to stop the slide if I plan to get to the playoffs.
The Carolina Panthers, my favorite professional football team, also finds themselves in a 0-2 situation. I’ve noticed that when I have a good season, they have a good season, and when I have a bad season so do they. Maybe we mimic each other due to the fact that I own one of their players (Steve Smith), or maybe it’s some weird coincidence. Even so, last year I had a dominating regular season (like them) and lost in the first round of the playoffs (again, like them). It’s a little freaky.
Update
Jul 15th
Well, as you can see, this is not the start of the aforementioned series of reviews. I’ve not yet been able to write said review and, in the interest of not leaving you all hanging, I thought I’d do a generic update. I haven’t been able to sit down and get a blog out lately, mostly because I’ve been busy with work and trying to get my joint writing work “Knight’s Woman” edited – among other things.
Some other updates since my last blog:
I’ve reduced my simming presence to a single simm, mainly due to the lack of time I’ve had to commit to it. I do not discount my previous comments on the importance of simming if you are a writer, but in the same regard I cannot hold positions that I’m unable to fulfill.
Post Thanksgiving Post
Dec 2nd
Hello again.
Well, we’re on the other side of Thanksgiving. The turkey was good, the stuffing was better, I didn’t finish my NaNo and got another rejection letter!
Ok, corny rhymes aside, NaNo is behind us and time is freed for the other 9000 things I haven’t gotten to lately. I’m nearing completion on the stealing story I gave you a sneak peek on, and working out the fine details of the story I’m writing for my friend Mina’s free read.
Bees get 50th
Nov 11th
I know it has been a while since I gave you some news on my Fantasy Football Dynasty but I felt today’s milestone would be a good opportunity. Last night, with wins in both the Yahoo and concurrent ESPN leagues of the Killer Bees’ fifth season – I won my 50th career fantasy football game. With the two wins last night my all time record now stands at 51-30-1. That makes for a respectable win percentage of 62.2%. You’ll notice that has dropped slightly from my percentage of 62.9 going into this year, but that is due mostly to the ESPN league I am competing in which has turned out to be my worst season so far.
To put it in perspective, I am 47-24-1 in Yahoo leagues and 4-6 in ESPN leagues. Had I not decided to run in the ESPN league this year, my win percentage would be 65.2%. But alas, you can’t win them all. I have yet to record back to back wins in the ESPN league this year and may miss the playoffs for the first time in my Fantasy Football career. But, at least my Yahoo team is doing well.
I realize that 99% of my viewership (about 2/3 people) will not care about this post. Well, as a male, I must say that Fantasy Football is important to me and thus I must share this momentous occasion with all of you. I’ll try to get a more thought provoking blog up soon.
Bees Dominate Division Foe, Snap Streak
Oct 7th
I guess my motivational speech from last week worked, because the Bees defeated the #4 team in the league to snap their losing streak 124-55. The outing, helped mostly by the stellar performance of Carolina Panthers Running Back DeAngelo Williams, was the highest score the Bees have posted this year and broke the team record of 115. This record was then broken again by the Bees 135 pts in the concurrent yahoo league). Over all, a fantastic week to be the Bees’ GM.
Bees Swatted Again, Slide to 1-3
Oct 2nd
If you’ve read the New England sucks post, you’re aware of my dire fantasy football team situation. The last two weeks have seen the Killer Bees hand wins to two winless teams on their way to the worst start in franchise history. This week, they’ll match up with the #2 team in the league. The Bees are favored in the matchup – the line is 116-78 – but they have been favored in all their matchups so far this season.
You may find yourself asking what the reason is for the three loss streak? The best I can come up with as head coach is – missed opportunity. Players that have been projected to perform well have not, and players that have been projected to perform poorly have done well. Almost every starting decision I’ve made this season has backfired, along with my trade and waiver wire acquisitions. It seems that after 39 wins and 3 trophies in 4 seasons, the Bees were due for a tough year.
New England sucks, and so does my Fantasy team
Sep 22nd
First of all, let me explain that I have a reputation to uphold in Fantasy Football. You see, in 2004 I started playing in a Yahoo public league and didn’t really know much about football or how to play. I had recently become a fan of the Carolina Panthers after watching their super bowl run the year before, and decided to try my hand at the new craze. That year I won the league. I played again the next year with the same team name and I won again. And thus, the obsession began. I would create a Dynasty – The Killer Bees. In my eyes, they were/are very real.
My luck would falter in 2006, when injuries and unlucky selections would lead to my getting defeated in the first round of the playoffs as a number 4 seed. In 2007, the Killer Bees bounced back with their biggest year ever. Another championship, yes, but a record setting season with a final record of 12-4.
This year, I signed up for another Yahoo public league with my same familiar moniker. The Dynasty would continue – but this year would prove an interesting one. I was invited to a league at work with nine other people that I actually know. I decided then that the Killer Bees would play two seasons this year, and the league at work would of course gain priority.
